Are you interested in reaching as many of your potential students as possible? Then make your course(s) accessible to all students by following a few simple practices. Not only is accessibility legally mandated for public education in California, it's simply the right thing to do. It's not hard and your students will benefit.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Follow the pertinent California Community College system and federal requirements
  • Locate accessibility resources on your campus
  • Draft an accessibility plan
  • Create accessible documents
  • Maximize accessibility using content delivery systems

Requirements for Completion

A passing performance on the following:

  • Participation in all required discussion
  • Submission of all required assignments
  • Submission of an accessibility plan

Hours Required

This is a 4-week course. Course completion, including reading, online discussions, and assignments, will take a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Required

Since you'll be improving the accessibility of an existing online course, you will need an online course shell ready to work on. IF you do not, we recommend taking the Intro to Teaching with either Blackboard or Moodle first.

Recommended Skills

  • Basic computer skills (use of word processor, e-mail, file management)
  • Basic Internet skills (use of browser, searches, uploading and downloading files)
  • Familiarity with discussion boards
  • Already teaching online 

Technical Requirements

  • Fairly recent Mac or PC (not more than three years old) with a current operating system
  • Current browser (Firefox for the Mac; Internet Explorer 6 or later, or Firefox, for PC users)
  • Internet connection, preferably broadband (DSL speeds)
