Online Education Standards & Practices (OESP) F17F02

Online Education Standards and Practices introduces educators to designing new courses, improving existing courses, and effectively facilitating online learning using the @ONE Standards for Quality Teaching and the Online Education Initiative’s Online Course Design Rubric. Participants will explore current learning theory and course design, including building a learning community, designing effective assessments, ensuring accessibility, and creating and curating course content. The outcomes for this course are to: Create an orientation unit and an instructional module for an online course or program that is the basis for the development of a complete online course and that meets the criteria for accomplished online courses as outlined in the OEI Online Course Design Rubric. Develop an ePortfolio that demonstrates your proficiency at online teaching and learning and meets the requirements of the @ONE Standards for Quality Online Teaching.

Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this course you’ll be able to:
  • Assess your strengths and weaknesses in the online environment and build a personal learning network to support your continued growth
  • Identify and apply local, state, and federal regulations and policies that shape the online learning environment and practices
  • Identify barriers to students success and integrate support to counteract these barriers
  • Create manageable units aligned with course outcomes
  • Design activities and assignments that encourage active learning and are aligned with course outcomes
  • Design activities, assignments, and rubrics that encourage self-assessment and provide timely formative feedback
  • Design course content, including HTML pages, documents and multimedia, that meets the requirements of Section 508 and WCAG 2.0
  • Create and curate course content that leverages the strengths of the online environment and the California Community College learning community
  • Use a variety of CMS tools to create resources, activities, and assessments
  • Use a variety of tools outside our CMS to create resources, activities, and assessments

Requirements for Completion:

    You must obtain at least an 80% (400 points) to pass this course and receive a Certificate of Completion. Assignments include:
  • Creating a production plan for your course
  • Writing clear policies and developing an online syllabus
  • Creating accessible course content, including HTML pages, documents, and multimedia
  • Curating discipline-specific resources using Open Educational Resources
  • Designing online activities, assignments, and grading rubrics to assess student learning

In addition, participants will build an ePortfolio and develop a course Sandbox with two units: an orientation and a content unit. The ePortfolio and Sandbox are assessed by a panel of trained peer reviewers. Participants who successfully pass the portfolio review will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Hours Required

This is a 12-week course. Course completion, including reading, online participation, assignments, and developing your sandbox and ePortfolio will take a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Required Skills

  • Basic computer skills, including word processing, email, and file management
  • Basic internet skills, including use of browsers, search engines, and uploading and downloading files

Recommended Skills

  • Familiarity with basic LMS/CMS features, including interacting in discussion forums and submitting assignments
  • Familiarity working with multimedia files is a plus

Technical Requirements

  • Up-to-date Mac or PC (not more than 3 years old) with a current operating system and current browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari)
  • Internet connection, preferably broadband (DSL speeds)
